Development Project

Providing Advice and Support to People with learning disabilities & their Families

The Manchester Mencap Development Project was set up in 1997.

It is based at Crossacres Resource Centre in Wythenshawe

Since 1997 the Development Project has grown steadily. There are now 5 staff working on a variety of projects covering all of the city of Manchester.

The Development Project has four main aims;

Develop Regular Contact with Mencap Members

The Development Project staff are able to be in touch with members on a regular basis.

This means we can stay aware of the needs of people with learning disabilities and their families in Manchester.

The Development Project also produces a regular newsletter. This helps to keep you up to date with local and national issues.

Advise and Assist Mencap Members Seeking Services or Help

The Development Project offers help to our members in several ways;

  • we let you know that there is someone there who will listen.
  • we can help you and your family to talk to and work with services.
  • we can offer you assistance for as long as you need it.

We are generally available Monday to Friday 8:30 to 4:00 for you to contact us with any questions.

Help Mencap Members to Get Your Voice Heard when You Talk to Service Providers

Many members have told us they face a lot of barriers when they try to stand up for their rights. This can break down your confidence and energy.

The Project aims to give power to members by assisting and
advocating so that you can make your voice heard yourselves.

Develop Services that Mencap Members Want

The Development Project tries to develop new services which people with learning disabilities and carers want.

At the Development Project we regularly talk to the Manchester Learning Disability Partnership and other voluntary groups in the area.

Working together means we can make sure you and your families are getting the best possible service by;

  • finding out about new services that members can access
  • identifying the ‘gaps’ in service provision.

This has led to the development of;

If you have any ideas of future services we could develop, please contact us.
